amaysim ASMF 2014 – It’s a Wrap

The 2014 AMAYSIM Australian Surf Movie Festival presented by GoPro has completed its tour of the Australian coastline, finishing up with it’s final encore shows at the most popular venues. It was astounding to us on the tour, how many people we met that own each of our released Movies over the last 10 years… to revisit our greatest click here. If you attended a show on this year’s tour, we’d love to hear about your experience, take our quick survey and go into the draw to win one of five double passes to next year’s ASMF.

Since the premiere show at the Randwick Ritz on January 2nd 2014, Tim and Sandrine have been on the road, with all the gear to bring surf movies to the big screen near you. Sound, projector, computer, banners and that massive screen!  It was Tim’s vision over 10 years ago to keep the old school surf night out alive and well and we can safely say he is succeeding.

In the 11th year of touring as the Australian Surf Movie Festival the number of shows has increased and Tim has kept the audience wanting more each year. On the road, Sandrine and Tim are everything; roadie, soundie, projectionist, door person and host. Tim says “On the day of a show and I’m hands on everything, covering every base. It’s all well and good to make the film but then I’ve got to run the entire roadshow and be out welcoming everyone even when the projector has a glitch or the car has broken down.’

Tim says, “The tour has been hectic and satisfying, every show I have had people coming up to me saying how much they loved the movies and I’m glad that we can still provide something that no one else is doing. This year on the road between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour the car blew it’s head gasket and the whole family was with me… that was pretty hectic! The Tweed Heads show was just massive this year we were packed beyond capacity and there was a real buzz in the air. It was so great to sit down and have a Q & A with photographer Ted Grambeau at that show bringing in a whole new angle.”

Tbp – The music always plays a huge part of the Australian Surf Movie Festival, what does it mean to you to choose tracks for your films?
Tim – “Putting a great track adds so much power and emotion to the images of the ocean and coastline. When you have footage without music there is no chemistry and it’s just not the same. The show has got great dynamics combining vision and music. I have exposed each location’s grand coastal landscape and beauty using slow motion on my Sony F5, usually we just turn up to shoot the surf but I wanted to make sure the unique landscape environments were a highlight in this show.”

Tbp – We get so many requests for the sound track and people want to know how you pick the music to match the footage?
Tim – “Yes, lots of people ask for the copy of the soundtrack, we haven’t released it. I listen to so much music, the undiscovered mixes of upcoming bands and groups is what I like to lay in with the footage. You know straight away whether a track has the power to connect with the motion and emotion of the screen.’

Tbp – There were 31 shows right around Australia in just 2 months, that’s a short but massive road trip. What were the highlights in the mix?
Tim – “The best shows were the Randwick Ritz and Twin Towns. They were the biggest shows. Most people have said they have been before and we are stoked to have people that come back year in year out. We want to keep film on the big screen alive. We are the only ones doing this every year and bringing the films to the people – we can’t go everywhere but we try to hit the biggest surf spots on the coast. We would love to take ASMF on the road all around the world but at the end of the day I can’t do it all, someone has to be out chasing the biggest waves.”

Tbp – Is this year’s show going to be released for people to watch again?
Tim – “The film will be available this year on DVD and Digital. If you have signed up to our newsletter or entered a competition at a show, you will receive a email with release data and URL, if not you can sign up on the top right of this page.

Tbp – What can we expect from the ASMF 12 coming in 2015?
Tim –  “I’m lucky that I’m now an ambassador with Sony and they are providing me with some of the best equipment, so the footage will be bigger and better than ever before. After recently shooting the amazing Pedra Branca with this great equipment I’m really excited about what we can bring you next year!”
